Dream lettering with Mickey Mouse ears on a foot
Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo
A black ink tattoo reads Dream in a flowing script with a bold capital D, surrounded by small four-pointed sparkles. A shaded silhouette of Mickey Mouse's ears sits to the right, with soft, speckled edges that fade into the skin. The close, angled photograph shows a bare foot against a turquoise cloth, with the tattoo centred in the frame.

Dear Tomasz,

Your mother tells me you have stopped sleeping because you are saving the ceiling of your bedroom for something, and I am not going to ask what, because you will only say it is a secret and then tell me anyway. I found the sticker sheet you left on my hall table. Forty-two silver stars, two of them already stuck to the kettle. I have decided the kettle deserves them.
When I was your age, the Saturday picture house on Wrexby Road still had a man who wound the reels by hand. He knew every film by the sound of its splice. He used to say a good picture was just a long sequence of small lights agreeing to be one thing. I thought he was daft. I think about it now whenever I pass the shuttered cinema and see the ghost of its marquee letters on the brick, the ones that spelled a word the rain has since taken off.
So here is my proposal. Bring the stars to Sunday tea. We will go out to the back field with the torch and a stick of chalk, and you will draw a little round-eared shape on the flagstones, and I will write the word underneath in the best capitals I have, the ones I learned from the man at the picture house. Then we will sit on the step and wait for the first light to come on in the upstairs window of the bakery, which is always the one that catches the sun first. Bring a jumper. Bring the kettle too, if you like. It has earned it.
Love, Nan
