Script lyric tattoo across a chest

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

Black script lettering runs in several lines across the upper chest, with a looping flourish on the opening capital. The strokes are smooth and even, with soft grey shading where the ink settles into the skin. The image is a close, slightly angled shot with a silver chain and hands framing the lettering, and the ink is the only colour.

Dear Ruth,

Mum's postcard finally caught up with me at a fuel stop called Scarrow Junction, where the man behind the counter hands out coffee in paper cups and asks no questions. You'll say I've gone the wrong way again. Half the town said so when I took the old Ledger road instead of the motorway, and the other half only wanted to know if I'd be back for the harvest dance.

The road runs straight for forty miles without a bend, so you can see the heat lifting off the tarmac long before it reaches you. There's a grain silo with a faded blue star, a dog that sleeps in the shade of a single Joshua tree, and a woman who sells date cake from a card table and calls everyone love. I've stopped trying to explain to people why I'm out here. It's easier to let them think I'm lost.

I'm not lost. The atlas is open on the passenger seat, the windows are down, and every mile I drive is one I chose on purpose. You'd hate the quiet, I think, but it's the first time in years nobody has told me where to stand, and I've found I don't mind the sound of my own thoughts out here.

Tell Dad the Corolla is fine and the tyres are holding. I'll ring from the next town if there's any signal, though there probably won't be. And if you ever get to the far end of the Ledger road yourself, stop at Scarrow and ask for Maud. She'll give you cake and tell you that you're going the wrong way too.

Love, Nell
