Butterflies and stars on a foot
Other · Colour · Photo
Three blue and purple butterflies with black outlines sit across the top of a foot, with a second butterfly partly visible at the top left. Yellow five-pointed stars and small black dots and sparkles are scattered between the butterflies. The linework is bold and the shading is soft, with the colour fills dominating the composition against light skin and a pale background.

The silk scarves had been cut into butterflies by the third night, and Hester Vane counted them twice before she let the lodgers down to breakfast. Ruth, the new girl from Leeds, had pinned them along the picture rail of the back bedroom with brass drawing pins borrowed from the hall desk. Their wings were blue and violet, edged in black thread she had stitched by lamplight, and between them she had scattered stars cut from the lids of old Carr's toffee tins, bright as yolks against the damp wallpaper.

"They'll go to the lighthouse," Ruth said, when Hester asked what on earth the arrangement was for. "Only they need the wind first." Hester had kept the house on Marine Terrace for thirty-one years and had never once had a guest stay past the end of the season, so she didn't argue. She only checked the window catches that evening and put a second blanket on the bed.
The wind came up after midnight, rattling the slates and driving spray against the sea wall. When Hester climbed the stairs at two with a candle, the picture rail was bare. The butterflies had lifted off the paper and gone out through the open sash, a loose blue cloud moving over the harbour towards the far white light, and the stars had stayed where they were, pinned and glinting in the draught.
In the morning Ruth's bed was made square and her case was gone. On the windowsill sat one yellow tin star, wet with salt, its points still trembling. Hester picked it up, found a drawing pin in her apron pocket, and fixed it above the front door where the sun would catch it first.
