Script quote across shoulder and chest
Lettering · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
A close crop showing a long handwritten-style script quote tattooed across the upper chest and shoulder, with a shaded black and grey element at the edge of the shoulder. A small outlined heart sits on the side of a finger, and a large black ring is worn on the same hand. The image is in warm tones with a red brick wall behind, and the lettering is the clear focal point.

The bakery wanted the words high on the brick, so Ruth Calloway went up the ladder at seven with a pot of gold size and a rule she had not used since her father's shop closed. Mr Okonedo had brought a scrap of paper to the kerb that morning, folded four times, and he would not say who had written it. "Today was like one of those fly dreams," it read, in pencil gone soft at the creases.

She worked the capitals first, the T and the w, because the rest of the line would hang from them. The script was the hard part. Her father had taught her to let the brush lift before the tail, to leave a stroke unfinished so the eye would finish it for you. Below her the street filled with bread vans, and a boy on a bicycle kept calling out the wrong word. Twice she stopped and wiped her hands on her overalls.
At half eleven Mr Okonedo climbed the steps with two cups of tea and stood looking up. He said his mother had kept the paper in her apron pocket for thirty years, and that on the morning she died she told him she had dreamt of flying over Hastings pier with the gulls underneath her, like a hand held out. He did not ask whether Ruth believed him. He asked whether the d could go higher.
She let the last stroke run. It climbed past the edge of the bricks and stopped in the thin blue air, one loop short of a kite string, and from the pavement the whole street could read it. Mr Okonedo raised his cup to it. Ruth put the brush in the jar and came down the ladder slowly, keeping her eyes on the word.
