Dotted trail and script on the hand
Fine line · Hand · Black and grey · Photo
A hand rests against a bare shoulder, showing a black dotted line that loops across the back of the hand and ends in small star shapes. Script lettering runs along the lower section of the design, and the linework is fine and even with soft shading. The image is a clean studio shot on a white background, and the only colour comes from a cartoon bee placed on a finger.

The Marwood Guest House had eleven rooms and one clock that ran fast, and Mr Pell, who took the attic room from the first of May, asked for a pencil before he asked for a towel. He drew on the backs of the breakfast menus. Dotted lines went out from the harbour wall, looped round the church, doubled back past the chip shop, and wherever they stopped he made a small star, the way a navigator marks a fix.

My daughter Nell kept bees on the cliff allotment, and one afternoon she brought up a jar of honey with a paper bee pinned to the lid. He laughed properly for the first time since he'd arrived, then asked whether bees ever got lost. I said they found their way home by the sun and the smell of their own hive. He said he had been told the same about people, and that it had never once worked for him.
On the last Sunday the fog came in off the water so thick the gulls sat on the railings as if waiting to be counted. He didn't come down to breakfast. I found the attic window open and, on the sill, a menu card with the reverse covered in dots that ran off the edge of the paper. Beneath them, in careful joined letters, he had written 'Always lost, not lost', and under that a single star.
I pinned the card above the kitchen dresser, beside the tide tables. Some mornings, while the kettle takes its time, I trace the dots with my finger, out past the harbour wall and round to where the star sits, and I think he got exactly where he meant to go. The fog never did say otherwise.
