Script quote across the upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of the upper back showing the words Doubt me, then watch me in flowing black script across the shoulder blades. The linework is smooth and even, with a fine stroke on the thin letters and heavier weight on the capitals. The image is in colour, with the skin appearing warm and reddened around the tattoo, and the plain background keeps the focus on the lettering.

The men at the mill laughed when Ysolt said she would carry the grain across the flooded ford before the bell rang. They laughed harder when she asked for the old rope and the ferryman's pole. Only Hadd, who had doubted her since she was small enough to be lifted onto a cart, kept his mouth shut and his arms folded.

She went down at the turn of the tide with a sack on each shoulder, and the water took her to the knee, then the thigh, then nearly to the waist. Halfway over she slipped on a stone the colour of tallow, and the whole row of carters let out a groan. She did not fall. She knelt, found the stone with her toes, and stood again with both sacks still dry on her back.
When she came up the far bank the bell had not yet sounded. Hadd waded out to the middle of the ford, took the rope from her hand, and asked in a low voice what she had done to the stone. She told him she had done nothing but ask it to hold. He laughed then, properly, the first honest laugh anyone had heard from him that season.
Every spring after, the carters chalked the words on the mill door where the children could read them: doubt me, then watch me. Nobody remembers who wrote the first letter. The chalk washed away with each winter rain, and each spring someone wrote it again.
