Script quote across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the upper back of a person wearing a black top and a beaded necklace, with the head cropped out of frame. A flowing black script reads "You can't have love without sacrifice" in a single line across the shoulder blades. The lettering is solid black ink with smooth, even linework and no shading, and the composition is centred on the text.

Your mother's ring is in the crucible with the old tin. I did not ask her first. I think she would have wanted it that way, though she always said she would rather I kept my hands out of the fire. She has been brave about all of this in the way she is brave about everything, which is to say quietly and with her chin up.
Harker laughed when I told him, and then he went quiet and brought me the good leather gloves from his own cupboard. Tell the boy to keep the forge swept and the bellows dry. There is no sense in a bell that sings like a kettle lid.
The new one goes up on Thursday. It will be a shade smaller than the one we lost, and I have had to hang it higher to get the note right. On an east wind you can hear it from the top of the hill. I will be up there every morning, listening for it. Come and tell me what you think of it.
