Script quote across the upper chest

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a black ink script quote tattooed across the upper chest, running in three slightly sloping lines below the collarbone. The letterforms are smooth, even and fine, with consistent weight and clean connecting strokes. The skin is lightly lit and the image is cropped tightly to the text, with no colour ink present.

Dear Mags,

The garage in Coyote Wells has been shut since Tuesday, so I am writing this on the back of a petrol receipt while Dan sits under the bonnet swearing at a fan belt that cost us eleven dollars and an afternoon. The road out of here runs straight as a ruler for forty miles, and at night the lorries go past so close the windows hum. I have counted fourteen since sundown. None of them stopped.

You will think I have gone soft, but I found a sign pinned to the diner wall, hand-lettered in good copperplate, which says GIVE ME STRENGTH WHEN I'M STANDING. The woman who runs the place told me her husband wrote it for a bet and never took it down. I asked her what the second half was meant to say. She said it was a sentence nobody finishes unless they are the one falling.

I am not falling, Mags. I am only tired in the way you get after a long drive with the radio off. But I keep thinking about your letter from March, the one you wrote after Mum's hip, when you said you could not find the words for any of it. I think the words are there. They are just written smaller than you expect, and you have to lean in to read them.

Dan has the belt on. The sun is going down behind the mesa, turning the road the colour of a struck match. I will post this in the morning from Ruiz Junction, and if the next town has a postbox that works, I will tell you how we got on.
