Script quote along the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A photograph of a single line of cursive script tattooed along the side of the torso, reading For we live by faith, not by sight. The letters are formed with fine black linework and some uneven shading, with the line rising slightly towards the right. The skin is pale and softly lit, and the lettering fills the centre of the frame.

Dear Hal, I very nearly didn't come to the reunion on Saturday. Then I saw your name on the list, printed just under Mr Brierley's, and I thought somebody ought to remind you that you still owe me a bicycle.

You will remember the fog that November, the one that sat on Wrenfield harbour for three days and made the gulls walk about as if they had mislaid their keys. We were fifteen and foolish enough to row past the breakwater towards the bell buoy, and when the mist closed over the oars I could not see my own hands. I wanted to turn back. You didn't. You said the bell was just ahead, we only had to listen and keep pulling, and when I asked how you could be so sure, you quoted something your father had painted on the boathouse wall. For we live by faith, not by sight, you said, and then you laughed at me, because I was crying and trying to pretend the spray was the reason.
We found the buoy by ear. I remember the tolling coming up through the water like a hand knocking on the underside of a table, and I remember deciding, somewhere between one stroke and the next, that I would trust you for the length of one more pull. I trusted you for about an hour, which felt like a lifetime and was probably the most useful hour I have ever spent.
I still have the old paraffin lantern you hung on the bow that night. I have carried it to every reunion since, on the off chance someone is still out there counting strides. I will leave it lit on the table by the door on Saturday. Bring your own bell.
