Black script lettering tattoo in two lines reading a romantic quote, placed along the side of the ribs beneath a dark top.

Script quote along the ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

Two lines of black cursive script run horizontally across the side of the ribcage, with the lower line partly cut off at the edge of the frame. The lettering uses smooth, even strokes with some shading in the thicker parts of the letters. The image is in natural light against pale skin and a dark fabric top, with the ink appearing solid black.

Sit closer, all of you, the fire has been hungry since the bride came in and it wants its share of talk. My great-grandmother was a cockle woman on the Ogmore sands, and she had a husband who went out past the bar one March and did not come back over it. The sea took his boat and kept the rest of him, as it does.

Every evening after that she walked down to the wrack line with a candle in a jam jar and said the one thing she had been left with, the line he used to hum badly over the washing: I'll never let you part, for you're always in my heart. The neighbours thought her soft in the head. The vicar called it grief and asked her to stop frightening the children with her singing at the tide.

Then one wet night in October a fishing boat came in on the wrong tide with a stranger aboard, a lad pulled from the water off the Mumbles with nothing but a tobacco tin sewn into his coat. Inside were letters in her husband's hand, written in the months before the bar took him. He had been carried north on a current, and a Scottish crew had kept him alive through a winter and never learned enough of his language to send him home. The last letter ended with the very words she had been saying to the sea.

So if anyone at this table tells you a promise is only ink on a page, tell them about the tin. Now pass the bread, and somebody fetch the groom a dry chair before he drips on the bride's good shoes.
