Forearm lettering reading This means nothing
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a forearm with the words THIS MEANS NOTHING written in capital letters across the skin. The lettering is a simple, hand-drawn sans serif in solid black ink with even, slightly spaced characters. The arm fills the frame against a blurred dark background and a glittery surface beneath it.

Ida had been lettering the harbour board since the spring gales stripped the old paint away. Mr Rennie wanted the crossing times, the tide tables and the price of a return ticket, all in the same plain black capitals. She worked with a brush no wider than a thumbnail and a tin of enamel that smelled faintly of pear drops.

A letter had come over on the Tuesday boat, addressed to nobody in particular. It asked whether the ferry still ran on Thursdays, and under the question someone had pressed so hard with a pencil that the paper had worn through. Ida folded it into her apron pocket and said nothing to anyone, because there was nothing in it to answer.
On Thursday she painted the board the way her father had taught her, every letter the same distance from the next, and at the bottom, where the names of the boats usually went, she added a line nobody had asked for. Rennie came out with his tea and read the times aloud, then stopped. He squinted at the last line. 'Why would you put that up?' he said. Ida wiped the brush on her sleeve. 'Somebody wanted to know.'
The boat came in at four. A woman in a grey coat stood at the rail and read the board for a long time, her lips moving slightly on the words. When the gangplank went down she stepped off without her bag, and the deckhand carried it up the slipway after her, calling out a name the wind kept taking.
