Script quote along the side of the ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The tattoo is a line of cursive script reading though every dark night, there is a brighter day, set over two lines on the side of the torso. The letters are solid black with smooth, even linework and a consistent weight throughout. The skin is lit softly against a plain background, and the text fills most of the frame.

The lift at Harrow Point has been dead since Tuesday, so you take the stairs with the shopping hooked over one wrist and count the landings the way you used to count Sunday hymns. Fourteen floors. The concrete sweats in the autumn damp and smells of bleach and somebody's dinner, and the strip lights on every half landing flicker as if they are thinking about it.

On the sixth floor someone has taped a card to the wall beside the fire door. The writing is joined up and careful, done in black marker by a hand that learned its letters on shopfront glass: though every dark night, there is a brighter day. Underneath, in smaller capitals, Eileen from fourteen has added that the spare bulbs are in the cupboard by the bins, and the stepladder is behind them if anybody is tall enough to reach.
You know Eileen. She painted the signs for the old Co-op before the towers went up, and she still cannot pass a badly spaced fascia without tutting. You have not spoken to her since the funeral, and you have not decided whether that was your doing or hers. Still, you stand there longer than you need to, reading the line twice, until a child on the floor above starts practising scales on a piano nobody on this estate can afford.
You put the shopping down. The cupboard is where she said, and the bulb is heavier than it looks. By the time you reach the fourteenth floor you have changed two lights on the stairs, your hands are grey with dust, and the lamp above Eileen's door is burning steady for the first time in a month.
