Dark script lettering reading through every dark night, there is a brighter day, tattooed across the upper chest in a black lettering style.

Script quote across the upper chest

Lettering · Chest · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a two-line script quote tattooed in dark ink across the upper chest, with the words running diagonally from left to right. The lettering is smooth, even and monoline, with a flowing cursive form and no shading. The ink is black and the skin is warm-toned, with a white garment edge visible at the left of the frame.

Inside the card, in her looping hand, she has written the line she used to say to your brother when he sat on the back step with his boots off: through every dark night, there is a brighter day. You laugh at that, alone, in the cold yard. Then you pull the first tray from the rack and feel the heat come up through the metal. Across the road a window goes yellow, then another. Somebody else is awake for the same stubborn reason you are.

By six the loaves are cooling in rows along the sill and the sky over the car park has gone the grey of pale ash. You stack the crates, sign the book, and walk the long way past the closed shoe shop where the fascia lettering has faded to nothing. The light comes up behind the flats, slow and unhurried, just as she said it would.
