Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
The image shows a line of black script lettering in a handwritten style, set across three lines of text on the side of the torso. The linework is smooth and even, with solid black ink and no shading. The photograph is taken close up on skin with a blue fabric visible at the right edge, and a faint partial tattoo is visible at the far left.

The lamp in the lambing shed had started to flicker a little after two, and Ruth Pengelly stood in the straw with her sleeves pushed up, watching the ewe strain and trying not to think about the cold creeping through her boots. Above the feed bin hung her gran's card, pinned there since before Ruth could read properly. The looping hand had been written on the back of an old feed invoice, and for years Ruth had taken it for the sort of thing women put up to keep spirits from sinking when the rain came sideways into the yard.

Tonight it looked more like a dare. The ewe went down again and a single foot appeared, then nothing for so long that Ruth's stomach went tight. She knelt, worked her fingers in, and found the head turned back against the pelvis. She eased it round the way Tom from the next farm had shown her the spring before he moved to Devon. Snow began ticking against the window. Her hands had gone numb and slick, so she talked to the ewe the way you talk to a horse, nonsense about the price of mangels and how the kettle in the farmhouse never boiled when you wanted it to.
The lamb slid out in one long rush, grey and limp. Ruth cleared its nose with a twist of straw, rubbed hard along its ribs, and blew into its face the way her gran had taught her. It sneezed, then bawled loud enough to rattle the hurdles.
She sat back against the wall, laughing and crying at once, and took the pencil from behind her ear. Beneath her gran's looping words she wrote, in her own cramped capitals, AND THIS ONE CAME OUT BREATHING.
