Black script lettering reading God is within her, She will not fail, with a small arrow below, tattooed on a person's ribs in a Lettering style.

Script quote and arrow on ribs

Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A black script quote reads across two lines, with a thin single-line arrow pointing right beneath the second line. The lettering uses a smooth, even black line with no shading, and the text sits flat and centred on the side of the torso against warm, dim lighting. The composition is a close, angled photo with a fabric edge visible at the top and left.

The third flight had come loose again, and Dilys Harrow stood at her bench with the hide glue going cold at her elbow, muttering at the shaft as if it had insulted her mother. I had been sweeping shavings for her since the spring. She did not hold with praise, so I had learned to read her silences instead.

Above the shop door, the lintel still carried the words her mother had painted there, in letters the salt had softened to grey: God is within her, she will not fail. Fishermen read it aloud as they came in for ash shafts and goose feathers, and most of them laughed. Dilys never did. "It was never about me," she said once, when I asked. "It was something she said to make me sit still for my letters."

On the morning of the regatta she handed me a bow she had made for the lifeboat men's competition, its string waxed and humming. The wind came off the estuary sharp and wrong, and I thought of the glue, the loose flight and the paint going to pieces above the door. My fingers would not stop shaking.

I drew, held, and let go. The arrow ran flat across the grey water, straight as a stitch, and struck the far side of the buoy with a sound like a closing book. Dilys did not clap. She wiped her hands on her apron, looked up at the faded lintel, and nodded once, as though the words had finally been read correctly.
