Script quote tattoo across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A close view of the upper back shows two lines of black script lettering, the first reading 'Those who fly solo' and the second 'Have the strongest wings', set centrally between the shoulder blades. The lettering is crisp with even, thin strokes and no visible shading, and the skin tone is warm and natural. The framing is tight on the back and neck, with a black strap running across the bottom edge of the frame.

The geese had already gone south when Maud Tallow found the young gander in the reeds below Carrow Mill, one wing dragging through the mud like a wet sail. He hissed at her. She had nothing but heel-end bread and patience, so she gave him both and sat with him until the frost came off the ditch.

The village said the bird was cursed. The miller said he was a fool to stay, since no lone goose would ever cross the Hallow Hills in autumn. Maud said nothing to either of them. She carried him home in a flour sack, splinted the wing with kingcup stalks and strips of her mother's linen, and named him Ninefold, because nobody in Carrow could tell her what else a bird deserved.
By spring he could run the length of the garden and lift his good wing to the hedge. Each autumn the skeins passed overhead, calling, and each autumn Ninefold stood at the gate and watched them go without a sound. Maud learned to read that silence. It was not grief. It was a bird waiting for his own strength to arrive.
The winter the river froze to the bottom, he climbed the highest roof in Carrow and stood there until the wind caught both wings at once. The village watched him rise over the ridge with snow falling behind him. Maud kept the gate open. In March, when the first skein came back up the valley, one bird broke from the front and dropped onto her garden wall, the ninth from the end, calling her name as though it had always known it.
