Script quote and bird on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows a forearm with a two-line handwritten script quote reading Take these broken wings and learn to fly, with a small bird silhouette to the upper right. The lettering is crisp, dark and of even weight, with smooth connecting strokes. The image is black and white and the shot is taken at an angle with a dark background, which keeps the focus on the text.

The swift had been beating itself against the high window of the Kessel crossing since the Tuesday shift began, and by the third night the lorry drivers were laying bets on whether it would drop before the dawn change. I was the one who had to climb the step ladder with a towel and a cardboard box, because the others said I had the steadiest hands on the desk and nobody else wanted to hold a bird that might die in their palm.

My father painted shop signs for forty years in a town where the border ran down the middle of the high street. He wrote in a flowing hand, never capitals if he could help it, and he used to say a line of script was only honest if you could read it from across a road. He sent me a card the week I passed my exams, with a line copied out in pencil: take these broken wings and learn to fly. I had taken it for a greetings card joke. He had meant it plainly.
The bird went still under the towel, all weight and no argument. I carried it past the barrier and the flags to the kerb of the car park, where the tarmac was still warm from the day. For a second nothing happened. Then it lifted, clumsy as a thrown glove, cleared the lorries and the fence and the white stripe painted across the road, and I stood there with an empty towel in my hands until the night shift called me back in.
