Fine line black script tattoo reading "fairest of them all" across the upper arm, shown in close up against blurred skin.

Script quote "fairest of them all" on skin

Fine line · Upper arm · Black and grey · Photo

A close-up photograph of the words "fairest of them all" in a thin, flowing black script across the skin. The linework is single and even, with no shading, and the letters slope gently upwards from left to right. The warm, soft-focus background of skin and a blurred household scene keeps the lettering as the clear focus.

The mirror came in wrapped in a tea towel, its silvering gone to grey freckles at the corners. Dilys Hanratty turned it over on the bench and found words pressed into the backing paper in a looping hand that leaned uphill as if it were climbing something: fairest of them all. Nobody at the shop had ever seen a joke written so carefully on the back of a looking glass.

The customer was a man with a van parked on double yellows. His mother had hung the mirror in her hallway for forty years and let him check his tie in it only on funeral days. He wanted it done by Friday. Dilys mixed the silvering solution at the back bench, and the room filled with a smell like cloves and warm pennies, while she worked out how much of the old silver to keep.

She stayed late, scraping the old backing away with a palette knife. The paper came off in one soft sheet, and beneath it the same words had been scratched into the glass itself, smaller, and under them a second line: for Ruth, who never once believed me. Dilys sat with that for a long time. Then she left the scratched lines alone and laid the new silver over everything else.

On Friday the man came back and she held the glass up so he could see himself. He read the words in the reflection first, backwards, then turned his head and read them the right way round. He didn't say anything for a while. When he finally did, he said his mother would have called it vanity, and Dilys wrapped the mirror in the same tea towel and handed it over without a word, because the glass had already said what it needed to.
