Script quote on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A black script quote runs across the forearm of a person whose arm is raised toward the camera, with the upper arm and torso visible behind it. The words read "Don't let the past make you're decisions, four today", set in flowing cursive with thick, smooth outlines and some shading. The ink is entirely black and grey, with a plain indoor background of blurred figures and fittings.

Old Harrow kept his bees at the bottom of the orchard, where the wall dropped into the ditch, and every spring he dug up the same stump. It was the pear tree his father had planted the year the mill burned. Every spring its roots pushed further up through the clay, as if they were looking for something he had mislaid.

His neighbour, a widow called Mags Teale, came over the wall one morning with a trowel in her apron and a cup of tea she did not offer him. She watched him heave at the roots for a while. "You'll dig till you're in the ground yourself," she said. "That tree has no more say in your business than the weather does."
He told her the tree had made him what he was. She laughed so hard she had to sit down on the wall. Then she nodded at the gate, where a child had painted a sign for the honey stall that spring. The letters ran uphill, and somewhere along the way the words had come out wrong. "Read it out," said Mags. Harrow read it slowly, the way you read a thing you have never once thought about: Don't let the past make your decisions, for today.
He looked at the sign, then at the stump, then at his own red hands. He left the roots in the ground that morning and set a row of beans in the soft earth beside them. By August the beans were climbing the wall, and the honey sold out before the month was done.
