Script quote on a forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A forearm carries a long line of black script lettering that reads "Don't let the past make your dicisions, for today", spread over two lines with the words flowing into looped capitals. The strokes are solid black with no shading, and the skin is pale with no other colour in the design. The camera is angled along the arm, with the wearer's black vest top and blurred indoor background filling the rest of the frame.

Dear Ruth,

You will think I've lost my mind, writing to you from the back of the marquee instead of just finding you by the trestles, but Mum has got hold of the seating plan again and I need somewhere to put my hands. The florist has already pinned a card to the cake stand with the line Gran used to say over the washing up, the one about not letting yesterday make the choices for you. I spent twenty minutes this afternoon deciding whether it was too sentimental to keep. It is. I am keeping it.

Thing is, I went to the old house on Tuesday, the one on Beech Road with the blue door that never shut properly. Mr Okafor was still next door, sweeping his step like he did when we were nine, and he asked after you before he asked after me. I told him you were in Leeds, doing well, and he nodded as if he had always known you would. I stood at the gate for a long while after that, thinking about how much of what we carried out of that house we never needed.

So I am writing this on the back of the order of service to say I am not coming to the reception in the blue dress. I am coming in the cream one, the plain one, the one Gran would have called sensible. Come find me before the speeches. Bring the photos of the lake. We will sit under the awning and let the rain do what it likes.

Yours, with the good pen, Carys
