Fine line world map on the inner wrist
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A raised hand shows a small world map tattoo on the inner wrist, with the outlines of the continents drawn in thin black linework. The map is drawn as an outline without shading, so the continents are defined by their coastlines alone. The ink is black on a plain, softly lit cream background that keeps the focus on the wrist.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction
The widow Agnes Pell did the drawing at her kitchen table on the morning the Mercy was due to sail. She had no proper ink, so she mixed stove soot with a drop of vinegar and cut a goose quill to a point. Her son Tomas held his arm flat on the oilcloth and complained that it tickled. She drew the coasts slowly from memory, because she had never seen most of them. She had only seen them in her late husband's atlas, which the damp had eaten to lace.

Tomas went south first, then west, then further than any boat from their harbour had gone. He was thirty months at sea before the first letter reached Agnes, and by then the lines on his wrist had blurred blue at the edges. In the bad weather off the horn of the southern land, when the sails were in rags and the master had stopped giving orders, he would hold his wrist to the lantern and run his thumb along the coast the way his mother had shown him, saying the names of the ports aloud, so the other sailors took it for praying.
The ship did not sink. It came home the long way round with half its crew and a cask of pepper nobody would buy. Tomas walked the last mile from the quay with his sleeve pushed up. The ink had gone grey, and a crease ran across the middle of Africa where the skin had folded. Agnes took his wrist in both hands and looked at it for a long time without speaking, the way a person reads a letter twice.
That night he borrowed the quill and, under the lamp, drew one more mark beside the coast of their own county, a dot no bigger than a grain of salt. It was the only line on his arm that had not come from his mother's hand. "That's us," he said. "So you know where to come back to."
