Script quote on inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A handwritten style script quote, reading You get what you give, is tattooed in black ink across the inner forearm near the wrist. The linework is thin and even, with the words set on a slight diagonal that rises from left to right. The photograph is taken indoors against a wooden table, with the wrist and a hand with dark painted nails in frame.

So one March I dug a fresh bed along the boundary, sowed it with nothing I cared about, and wrote on the seed tin in my own careful hand: Take what you need. Then I sat on the back step with a flask and waited to see what she would do. The lettering on that tin looked lazy and sloppy, the sort of thing you'd scrawl on a lunch box, but I had meant every loop of it.
In September a jam jar appeared on my step, runner beans packed upright and a label taped to the lid in green felt tip. It said, For the one who waters. I had never once watered her side of the fence. Still, the next morning I filled the can and carried it along the boundary, and the soil I'd soaked for her had gone dark and cool under the leaves.
