French quote in fine line script on forearm
Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A thin black script tattoo reads Je pense, donc je suis across the inner forearm, running diagonally from wrist toward elbow. The linework is delicate and even, with no shading, and the lettering is clearly legible. The photograph is black and white, with a blurred room and a partly visible person in the background.

Dear Mr Okafor, I am writing about the lift on the ninth floor, which has been out since Tuesday, and about the wall beside it, which I have been told to paint over twice now. The second time I stopped with the roller in my hand, because someone had written a line there in fine black pen, very neat, in French. Je pense, donc je suis. Mrs Varga on the fourth floor says it means being alive is enough. Mr Pike says it means he is always right. I think it was the young woman from flat 92, who carries library books up nine flights every evening and has never once looked at the lift numbers, as if she has already decided which floor she belongs on.

I asked her about it on the stairs on Thursday. She didn't stop walking. She said a man in a film had worked out that he must exist because he could doubt everything else, and that she had found this comforting for about a week before it became irritating. Then she asked whether the lift would be fixed before her mother's birthday, which is in March, and I said I would ask again. That was the whole conversation, and I have thought about it more than I expected to.
So I am recommending that we leave the wall alone for now. Residents climb the stairs anyway, and I have noticed they slow down at that corner, some of them only for a breath, some of them longer. Mrs Varga has started bringing a flask up to the landing. I cannot say the line is doing anything useful, but nobody has complained about it, which in this building is close to a miracle.
If the lift is still broken in March, I will ask the engineers to come in person. If they ask why, I will tell them there is a wall on the ninth floor that people need to read before they can go any further.
Yours faithfully, Dennis Hale, Caretaker, Ashcombe House
