Script quote on ribs
Lettering · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo
A close-up photograph of a person's side, with a pink sports bra across the upper torso and long blonde hair visible at the left edge. Two lines of cursive script read Never a failure and Always a lesson in dark blue-black ink, with smooth, even linework and no visible shading. The text runs horizontally across the ribs and fills the centre of the frame against a warm, softly lit background.

The grafting knife is still in your coat pocket, and the cut on your left thumb hasn't stopped weeping. Your uncle Dennis has been watching you from the gate for ten minutes without saying a word, which means he has an opinion about the third tree you've split this morning.

The orchard runs down to the river in rows nobody has planted since 1962. It's late August, the Bramleys hang so heavy the props groan, and wasps have found the windfalls. Your grandmother's ledger sits on the potting bench under a jar of bent nails, every graft she ever made recorded in pencil: date, rootstock, scion, outcome. Beside the failures she wrote the same two lines each time, and the ink has gone brown with age.
You open the ledger to the year your mother left and find a column of crossed-out grafts. In the margin beside the last one, in her looping hand, is the line you have been half-remembering all summer. Under it she has drawn a small cut branch, angled the way she taught you to angle it, so the cambium meets the cambium.
Dennis comes in, takes the knife from your pocket without asking, and reseats the scion with two careful turns of tape. "Again tomorrow," he says. You pick up the roll and nod, and the wasps keep circling the windfalls while the light goes gold over the river.
