Script quote tattoo on the thigh
Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a person in a denim shirt holding up the hem to show a line of cursive script on the outer thigh. The text reads "Not all those who wander are lost" in fine, dark ink set over two lines. The skin tone and soft, warm background keep the focus on the lettering, which is the only colour element.

Dear Tom,

Rain has been sheeting across Saltergate market since Tuesday, and the awning over my map stall sags like a wet sail. Nobody buys maps in the rain. They buy sandwiches and umbrellas. Yesterday an old man ducked under the tarp, shook himself like a dog, and asked me the way to Whitby. I gave him a road atlas from 1978, and he tutted at the coastline, which had moved, he said, since his youth. He wasn't wrong. Nothing stays put when you look away.
You'll think I've gone soft, but I've been reading the margins of the old atlases again. Somebody in 1961 wrote in pencil beside the Peak District: not all those who wander. The rest of the line has been rubbed away by a thumb. I've spent three evenings trying to guess what came after the word lost, and I keep landing on the same answer, which is that you are the rest of it.
So here is the arrangement. The stall shuts on Sunday. Come home, or don't, but send me a postcard with a real postmark so I know where you stood when you were sure of something. I'll pin it above the till beside the Whitby man's atlas.
The kettle's on. Mind the step, it's slick.
Nell
