Script quote on the inner wrist
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of black script lettering across the inner wrist, reading 'Go and try you'll never break me' over three lines. The strokes are smooth and even with a flowing, handwritten look, and the capital G has an looping flourish. The ink is solid black on pale skin against a blurred wooden floor, with the text filling most of the frame.

Right, sit down, the lot of you. Gerald, you're blocking the gravy, and the gravy's the only thing in this room still warm. You'll remember Pauline Ashdown, cardigan the colour of stewed tea, who kept the register like a bank keeps gold.

That autumn she kept Ruth Pollard behind after the bell over a library book lost in the canal, forty pence owed. Ashdown tipped Ruth's satchel out across the desk, a pencil case, a squashed cheese roll, and then she said the thing about Ruth's dad that everybody knew but nobody said aloud. Ruth didn't cry. She picked up the cheese roll, put it back in the satchel, and said, "Go on, then. Go and try. You'll never break me."
Nobody in that room had ever heard a girl talk like that to a teacher. Ashdown went the colour of her cardigan and sent her out. What none of us knew was that Ruth had been practising the line on the bus all week, under her breath, the way you'd rehearse a times table. Ashdown never mentioned the book again. The fine was never paid and never chased.
So when you see Ruth at the bar tonight, don't ask her what it means. Ask her to say it. She'll say it the same way, a little bored and a little sweet, and you'll understand the joke was never on her. Now, Gerald, pass the gravy before it goes cold.
