A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

The gatekeeper of Harrowmere had kept the iron key for thirty winters, and in all that time he had never once looked inside the casket the queen left in his keeping. She pressed it into his hands on the morning her ship went out past the harbour bar and told him only to guard it until she came back. So he sat in the gatehouse with the casket on his knees, watching the road over the hills and the grey water beyond the wall.

The villagers brought him bread and gossip. The baker's boy asked whether it held gold. The miller's wife asked whether it ticked. He told them nothing, because a keeper who talks is no keeper at all. The gate hinges rusted and he oiled them. His knees stiffened and he stopped climbing the wall at dusk, but the casket never once went cold in his hands, and he kept his eyes on the road.

In the thirty-first winter a woman came up the hill in a sailor's coat with salt in her hair. She held out her palm, and on it lay a small brass key worn bright at the teeth. He turned the casket over, found the keyhole on its base, and the lid lifted with a dry sigh.

Inside was a folded paper gone brown at the creases, with a single line in a looping hand: keep your watch on this, my heart, and I will come home. He read it three times. Then he folded it back along its creases, hung the iron key on a string round his neck, and climbed up to the gatehouse to watch the road, which was, he supposed, exactly what she had asked of him.
