Script quote tattoo on a forearm
Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo
A close photograph of a line of black cursive text tattooed across the forearm, reading I will make better mistakes tomorrow, with the lettering split over three lines. The linework is thin and even, with no shading, and the ink is solid black on light skin. The composition is taken from above and at an angle, with the arm running down the frame and the wearer's red plaid shirt, denim shorts and white sneakers visible in the background.

The form had the wrong year on it, and Nadia Orlov saw it at the same moment the man in the grey coat saw her see it. He was leaning on the counter at the Halvard bridge crossing with his passport open between two fingers, as if the wind off the river might take it.

"Two thousand and eleven," she said. "You've written the old year."
He winced, then smiled, a crooked thing that took years off him. "I have been writing the old year since January. My hand does not believe the calendar."
She unclipped the pen from its chain, struck out the figure with one clean line, initialled it, and slid the form back under the glass. Behind her the ledger lay open at the day's page, where she had kept a column of small errors for eleven years: misspelled surnames, swapped passport numbers, a child's birthday written as a Tuesday when it had been a Thursday. Nobody had asked her to keep it. It was simply easier to write things down than to carry them.
"Do you note every mistake?" he asked.
"Only the ones I have to fix."
He took his passport and walked out into the grey light over the water. Nadia wrote his name at the bottom of the page, and beneath it, in pencil, the sentence her mother used to say whenever a dish burned: I will make better mistakes tomorrow. Then she stamped the next form and waited for the next line to come through the gate.
