Script quote across the upper back
Fine line · Shoulder · Black and grey · Photo
The photograph shows the back of a person's shoulder with a single line of cursive lettering that reads tomorrow never dies. The linework is thin and even, in black ink, with no shading. The lettering runs horizontally across the skin, with plain pale skin and a soft indoor light around it.

Mind the kettle, it's older than the big top and boils faster than your nerve. Now. The Pellow and Sons Travelling Circus folded in the autumn of 1962 in a damp field outside Ludlow, and what everybody remembers is the sign. Old Amos Pellow had it painted in curling white script along the side of the lead wagon: tomorrow never dies. Nobody argued with him. Nobody could afford to.

By the back end of that season there were four clowns, one lion with bad hips, and a trapeze nobody would climb any more. Amos sold the elephant to a zoo in Chester to cover the feed bill. He sat on the wagon step each night with his ledger open on his knee, and the girl who did his sums, Nell Baker, nineteen, with hands like a bookbinder's, asked him once why he kept that sign so bright when the show was dying under it.
He didn't answer. He went through the ledger with her instead, column by column, and she found what he'd been hiding: every wage had been paid from his own savings since June, and the figures on the last page were written in a different ink, a careful hand trying to look like it wasn't scared. She shut the book and said he was a fool. He agreed.
The next morning Nell climbed the wagon with a pot of white and a fine brush. The rain had got into the letters overnight and smeared the dies into a grey smudge. She painted it over, every curl, and when she stepped down the field was still wet and the old words stood up bright against the sky.
