Lettering · Other · Black and grey · Photo

A woman with long dark hair, wearing a grey sleeveless top, shows a black script quote on the side of her hip. The lettering is set across three lines in a flowing hand, with fine, even strokes and solid black ink. The image is a close, softly lit crop with the tattoo in the lower right and a wooden railing and blurred background behind.

Hal Pardoe had grafted the same pear tree three times before the wood took. Every August the fruit dropped into the long grass and rotted there, and every August the neighbours told him to cut it out and plant apples, which at least sold at the crossroads market.

His granddaughter Nell was nine that summer and had no patience for pears. She climbed the orchard wall at dusk with a clay pot of warm wax and a knife, and she set herself to a branch that had split in the spring storm. Hal watched from the gate with his pipe unlit. He did not tell her it was foolish. He said the cut must be clean and the binding tight, then went in to scrape the supper pot.

The branch did not take. Nell went back the next morning and found the wax cracked and the bark gone brown at the join. She sat in the grass a long while. Then she fetched the knife again, cut a fresh sliver from the healthy limb, and bound it in a strip of her old shirt. She checked the wrapping every morning after that, pressing it snug with her thumb before the dew had lifted.

By the last week of August the mended branch hung low with a single pear, yellow and freckled, too heavy for its stem. Nell did not pick it. She stood beneath it with her hands in her pockets and waited for the neighbours, who came up the lane one by one to look. Hal came last. "Well," he said, and nothing more, because there was nothing more to say. The pear fell in the wind before anyone could reach it, and Nell laughed and ran to catch it in her apron.
