Script quote tattoo on the ribs

Fine line · Ribs · Black and grey · Photo

A fine line script quote in black ink runs across two lines on the side of the torso, reading 'We accept the love we think we deserve'. The lettering has even, delicate strokes with some variation in weight where the pen changes direction. The ink is crisp against the skin, and the photo is framed closely on the tattoo with a dark garment edge at the top and a green fabric corner at the left.

The queue at Varnely Bridge had stopped moving an hour before dusk, and Marta Kessel had already stamped forty passports without looking up. The man at the window was the forty-first. He slid his papers across the counter with a folded sheet pinned beneath them, the paper soft at the creases, and when she reached for the stamp he laid one finger flat on the sheet as if it might blow away.

"It's only a letter," he said. "Not for you to read." She didn't. She saw the handwriting anyway, a slanted, careful script in blue ink, and a line copied out near the bottom and underlined twice: we accept the love we think we deserve. Behind him a lorry engine idled, and someone tapped a horn twice, politely, the way people do when they are afraid of being rude.

Marta had once kept a notebook of lines like that, copied from library books in the months after her mother moved to the coast. She had never posted any of them. She thought about the cold room under the customs hall, where undelivered post from both sides of the river sat in grey boxes, waiting for someone to come and ask for it.

She lifted his finger off the paper, slid the letter back to him unread, and stamped his passport twice, once on each page, hard enough to leave a mark. "Post it from this side," she said. "It'll get there faster than you will." He laughed, surprised, and went through the gate with the letter tucked inside his coat, the underlined line still pressing its shape through the paper.
