Script quote along the forearm

Lettering · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A close photograph of a forearm with the words "We accept the love we think we deserve" written across it in two lines of black script. The linework is smooth and even, with the thicker strokes of the capitals contrasting with the finer joins of the lowercase letters. The image is entirely black ink on skin, with a warm red-tinted background of skin and lighting filling the lower part of the frame.

Dear Tom,

Your mother rang on Sunday to say you've gone quiet again, so I am writing, because I have never managed to say a difficult thing out loud without it coming out sideways. The roses along the back wall are finally doing what I promised in March. I went out this morning with the secateurs and deadheaded the lot, and I thought about that young man with the van the whole time, and I was cross with myself for thinking about him at all.

I won't tell you what I think of him. You know what I think. Let me tell you about the bush by the shed instead, the one your grandfather planted the year you were born. For six summers it gave nothing but leaves, and every autumn I told him to dig it out. He said it was only sulking. Last June one cane put out a bud the colour of cheap jam, and it opened small and crooked, and it turned out to be a rose after all. It is the only one on the wall that smells of anything.

Here is what I should have said at Christmas instead of passing you the gravy. Ground only gives back what it is offered. If you keep taking whatever is poured over you and calling it weather, you will end up with a garden full of leaves. Love that turns up late and leaves early is still love, dear, but it is not the only kind going, and you are allowed to hold out for a better kind.

I've wrapped a cutting in damp newspaper and sent it with this. Put it somewhere the sun reaches before you decide what you're owed. And if it doesn't take, come and have a go at mine.

Love, Auntie Bea
