Script quote with red heartbeat lines
Lettering · Other · Mixed · Photo
The tattoo shows a handwritten script quote in black and grey shading with white highlights, reading In, All, This, Chaos, We, Found and Safety across the centre. Two red heartbeat traces with pale highlights run through and around the lettering, and dark smoky shading sits behind the words. Mostly red ink with black and grey lettering gives a mixed palette, and the words fill the frame with the heartbeat lines extending above and below.

She stood in the sawdust under the rigging while the last of the rain drummed on the canvas, her pulse knocking in her wrists the way it always did before the wire. Her brother Teodor was already at the far pole, tightening the guy lines with cold fingers and pretending he was not watching her.

Nobody had bought a ticket in Dunmere for eleven days. The posters had faded to the colour of weak tea. Still, the horses had to be fed and Father's old paraffin lamp had to be lit at dusk, so every evening the three of them climbed the ladder one rung at a time, and every evening the wire hummed under her palm like something alive.
On the last night the rain stopped. Teodor counted the seats from the centre ring and got to nineteen, then twenty-two, when a boy in a borrowed coat came in with his mother and sat on a plank near the front. Marta went up without thinking. The wire was slick and the lamp swung on its hook, but halfway across her heartbeat settled into a steady rhythm, red and sure, and the audience gasped and then, astonishingly, began to clap.
When she reached the platform Teodor was crying into his sleeve. "Twenty-two," he said. "It was never going to be a crowd. It was only ever going to be us." She looked down at the boy, who was still clapping with both hands, and found the wire was the steadiest thing in the tent.
