Dear Tom, the cousins from Leeds drove off on Tuesday with the good cider press in the back of their estate car, and I thought of you, because you always said the orchard was ours by blood and I never argued. I should have. Blood only got them the paperwork. Ned's will gave the trees to whoever was still up a ladder at Michaelmas, and that was Priya, her brothers, and old Mr Dunn with his bad hip, who wouldn't come down until the solicitor had read the clause twice.

Ned had no children of his own, which is where the trouble started. For thirty Septembers the same faces came up Sallowfield Lane with their baskets and their flasks, and Ned paid them in cash and seed cake and never once asked whose cousin they were. The Leeds lot visited twice in all that time, both times to ask about the valuation.

When the clause was read out in the Chapel Hall, the Leeds cousins looked at each other as if someone had made a joke in poor taste. Priya laughed so hard she had to sit down on the wall outside. Mr Dunn just nodded, as though he had always known the old man would pick his own heirs the way he picked his Bramleys, by which ones were ripe.
