Script reading try three times on a forearm

Fine line · Forearm · Black and grey · Photo

A thin black script reads try three times in a single flowing line across the forearm. The linework is even and delicate, with no shading, and the ink is solid black. The arm fills most of the frame against a dress with a dark floral print, with a fan and a window softly out of focus behind.

A story inspired by this tattoo · fiction

Sit closer, you lot, the fire's been going since four and this story is older than my knees. Up on the Esplanade stood a dance hall called the Palais Rosa, and over its side door hung a little board with three words painted in curling black: try three times. Nobody knew who'd put it there. The manager said it was the old owner's notion, a joke about gentlemen who gave up at the first no.

In the summer of nineteen thirty-one, a clerk from the gasworks called Walter Finch stood at that door with a clean collar and his hat in both hands. He had watched Ivy Marsh cross the floor every Saturday for two years, always with her sister, always with her chin up. The first time he asked her to dance, she looked at his shoes and said no thank you, quite kindly, and turned back to her lemonade. He went home and cursed the board.

The second Saturday he asked again. She said no again, but she laughed, and he trod on the hem of her frock as he walked away, which made her laugh harder. The third Saturday the band struck up a waltz nobody could dance properly, and Walter didn't ask at all. He simply held out his hand and waited, the way you wait for a tram you know is coming. Ivy looked at the hand for a long while, then she took it.

The board came down years ago, the paint gone soft in the sea air. But the couple who ran the place after them swore that on quiet nights you could still hear the band try that waltz once more before giving up, and every time, somebody got up to try again.
