Scripture lettering across upper back
Lettering · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A black and white photograph of a script tattoo across the upper back, reading I can do all things through Christ, who strengthens me, with the reference Philippians 4:13 set beneath. The lettering uses fine, even linework with a flowing cursive form and is rendered in solid black ink. The text runs diagonally across the frame, with the shoulder blade and skin texture visible around it.

Our kitchen table was covered in feed sacks, the wireless murmured on the windowsill, and the letter from the bank sat unopened beside the teapot. Mum had written a verse on the back of an envelope and stuck it to the fridge with a magnet shaped like a Welsh dragon: I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me. Dad read it aloud each morning as if it were the shipping forecast, flat and unhurried, then pulled his boots on.
On the fourth night a lamb came wrong, breech and blue. Dad went quiet in the way he does, sleeves rolled to the elbow, and I knew he was reaching for something he didn't have words for. I held the lamp. It took an hour. The lamb lived, wobbling in the straw, and Dad sat back on his heels and laughed at nothing.
Next morning he took the chalk from the nail on the barn door and wrote the reference beneath the verse, Philippians 4:13, in capitals that leaned like fence posts in a wind. Then he handed me the chalk and said it was my turn. My letters came out crooked. The snow kept falling, and we left them there for the crows to read.
