Nell had been told the medlar would not fruit again. Mr Pryce from the nursery said it plainly over the gate, his hands deep in his coat, and she nodded as though he had quoted her the price of compost. The tree had stood at the bottom of the walled garden since her husband planted it the year the chapel roof came off, and it had given nothing for three summers.

She did not argue. She went down the path with the secateurs and cut back the dead wood from the crown, working until the sky over the wall turned the colour of weak tea. The ivy had got into the brickwork near the gate, and she pulled it away in long grey ropes, finding beneath it a line of old mortar scratched with initials nobody living remembered. Her knees complained. She kept going.

In February the lamb's ear by the pump put up a single green shoot, and then the medlar, when she was no longer looking at it, showed a bud the size of a barleycorn. Mr Pryce came back to see about the pear espalier and stood a long while under the bare branches with his cap in his hand. "Well," he said. "Well now."

Nell found the seed packet she had been saving for the spring, its paper gone soft as cloth, with a small cross her mother had drawn in the corner. She turned it over and wrote on the back in pencil, then went in to put the kettle on, leaving the gate open to the lane.
