The snow has been falling since Tuesday, and by the time the coach from Keswick lurches into the yard, the drifts have swallowed the second step of the mounting block. You hold the lantern high so the driver can see the gatepost, and he bellows something about a lame leader that won't pull. Behind you Mrs Pargeter is already demanding towels, and the kitchen fire roars loud enough to rattle the copper pans on their hooks.

Inside, the travellers come stamping and swearing, shaking white from their collars onto the flagstones. There are six of them and one wet spaniel that goes straight for the hearth. A trunk has split open in the hall and a crate of bottles has clinked its way across the floor. You count heads, then count them again, because the rule of this house has always been that nobody sleeps until everyone is accounted for.

The last to come in is a boy of about twelve, who refuses to leave the wall by the gate. He sits there with his cap tipped back, catching flakes on his tongue and laughing at nothing you can see. Mrs Pargeter calls him a fool and a candle-end and threatens him with the ledger. You climb up beside him anyway, and for a while neither of you says a word. Then he asks whether the snow ever stops, and you tell him it always does, though not before it has made a fool of everyone who expected otherwise. He grins, and you both go in, stamping the cold off your boots.
