Fine black cursive script tattoo curving along the outer thigh, with lettering that reads she laughs without fear of the future.

Script quote tattoo along the thigh

Lettering · Thigh · Black and grey · Photo

A curved line of fine black cursive script runs from the hip down the outer thigh, with some words written upside down along the lower section. The lettering is thin, even and crisp, with no shading, and the skin tone is the only other colour in the frame. The tattoo fills the diagonal composition, with a green fabric edge at the top and a white sheet below.

Sit closer, the wind up here takes half of what I say and gives back the wrong half. Good. Now, the road over Hallam Gap was carved by a woman named Ysolde Brand, who came up it in the spring of the bad winter with a mule, two daughters and a carpenter's chisel. The mule died at the second bend. The daughters did not, and neither did she, though the carters down in the valley swore she would not last a night with the drifts piled to the eaves of the inn.

She did not sit and weep. She walked the line of the old goat track with a lump of chalk in her apron pocket and marked the curve of it on the rock, bend by bend, the way a scribe lays out a page. At each turn she wrote a line from her late husband's psalm book on the stone, so the carters would have something to read while their oxen got their breath back. Strength first, then dignity, then the part the carters liked best, that she laughed without fear of what was coming. The men in the valley said it was madness to waste chalk on rock. Ysolde said chalk was cheap, and a road with nothing to read on it was a long road.

Those letters are gone now under a hundred years of rain, but the bends are not, and every carter who crosses believes the words are still there, so they keep their heads up in the white part of the year. Mind the last corner. Yes, that one. Look at the stone and you will see her chalk, or you will see nothing, which is the same thing up here.
