Colour tattoo of two pink and blue butterflies with black swirling vine linework across the hip and lower back.

Butterflies and swirls on a hip

Back · Mixed · Photo

Two pink butterflies with blue and black outlines sit among black swirling vine linework that curls across the skin. The black lines are bold and smooth, with blue shading behind parts of the swirls and soft pink fills in the wings. The tattoo sits on a close, softly lit crop of bare skin with a hand resting at the left edge.

The lads who came to paint the stairwell in June left a tin of pink gloss and a brush with the bristles all splayed, and I've been using it on the bench by the bins, where the paint keeps lifting in the wind. Last Sunday I did two butterflies on the concrete wall beside the lift, just to see. Kids stopped to look. One of them asked if they were real and I said only as real as anything that stays still long enough to be looked at.

Dad would have hated the mess. But the vine and the butterflies have made the place feel like it belongs to somebody, and I'm not sure the council will scrub them off without a fight. Mrs Adair from the ground floor has offered to hold the ladder.

Write back soon and tell me the sea's still there. Love, Rosie.
