Sea scene fine line tattoo on upper back
Fine line · Back · Black and grey · Photo
A diamond-shaped sea scene drawn in thin black monoline sits at the centre of the upper back. It shows a crescent moon and small stars above wavy horizontal lines, a sailing boat and a whale or fish breaking the waves, a small bird, and an anchor below. The linework is even and clean, the ink is black with no shading, and the design is centred on the back against plain skin and a dark top.

The whale had been dead for three hours before the sensors agreed it was a whale. Until then the thing under the hull had read as reef, and Tamsin Okoro had spent the dawn watch at the rail of the salvage tender, counting the tide against the ribs of the old ferry the crew called Anchorage Nine. Now the grey back broke the swell like a slow hinge, and the bosun was shouting for the winch.

Nobody on the Nine had seen a whale since the Drowning Years, when the water rose past the lighthouses and the charts became opinions. The old ones said the sea had once been full of them, singing across hundreds of miles. Tamsin had never believed it. She had grown up on the rafts at Carrick Bay, where the only songs were hulls knocking together at night. Still, she caught herself humming while the cable ran out, three notes over and over, until the bosun told her to stop.
They towed the carcass into the lee of the fishing platform, and by evening the whole raft had come to look. Children lowered lanterns on strings. Old Harrow, who kept the star almanac, sat on an upturned crate and sketched the thin crescent moon rising over the swell, insisting the whale had come to find its way home by it.
Tamsin dropped the old iron anchor from the locker beside the whale's flank to mark the spot. When the tide turned she watched the carcass drift out, pale under the stars, following the silver road the moon laid across the water, until a gull lifted from the platform rail and went after it, calling.
