The frost has held on the top field for nine days now, and Father has stopped pretending he minds. I walked out this morning before the light and found the ewes bunched by the gate, breath standing over them like little clouds, and I counted them twice the way you taught me. Forty-one. The lamb that was born backwards in November is still with us, though it limps now and follows the others at a distance, as if it has been told it is not quite one of them.

You will remember the rings inside it, wound round and round on their own silver wire like the spokes of a wheel that never turns. Mother used to say you could tell the whole year from the pattern if you looked long enough. I looked last night by the lamp and could see nothing but loops, but I left it open on the table so the room would smell of her.

The post van has not come since Tuesday. If it comes before the thaw, send the seed catalogue and the pattern for the blue cardigan, the one with the star cable. I will knit it for Eli when he gets back from the depot, if he gets back before March.
