Sea turtles and coral full sleeve
Realism · Upper arm · Colour · Photo
A full sleeve of an underwater scene, with two sea turtles swimming near the top of the arm above branching coral, a lionfish with spiny fins on the side, and yellow and orange reef forms below. The turtles and fish are shaded with soft gradients and fine detail, while the coral and water use bold, saturated colour. The photograph shows three views of the arm against a black background, and fragments of script lettering appear at the bottom edge.

By the time the postman brought the tide tables, Mum had already cut the valerian back to the wall and the old rockery had turned into a sea. She painted the lower bed the green of deep water, pinned a sheet of blue paper behind the greenhouse, and hung a net of glass floats from the washing line so the whole garden seemed to lean toward the harbour.

My brother Ansel sent a postcard from Eilat with a lionfish on the front, its spines drawn like bristles on a hairbrush. Write what you see, Nell, he had always said, so I wrote him about the sea kale pushing up through the gravel, the fuchsia trying hard to be coral, and the two stone turtles Dad had bought off a market stall in Penzance, which Mum had dragged to the pond edge and refused to move back.
The turn came in March, when a real turtle turned up in the culvert at the bottom of the lane, a green one with a barnacle on its shell like a missing button. The vet from Newlyn said it had been carried north on a current and was thin and tired. We kept it in the old zinc bath for a week, and Mum sat beside it reading Ansel's postcards aloud, the way you read to someone who is nearly asleep.
When the animal finally slipped off down the slipway, Mum stood up, brushed the grit from her knees and said the garden was finished now. I went round and planted a single orange dahlia by the wall, bright as a lionfish fin. Some things you do not keep. You only learn their colours.
