Seahorse in black line zentangle pattern

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

A seahorse is drawn in bold black outline on white paper, with its body, fins and curled tail filled by repeating curved and concentric line patterns. The linework is uniform and dense, giving a textured, shaded look without any grey tones. The seahorse fills the centre of a plain white background, with the tail curling up at the bottom.

The tally book lived in the wheelhouse drawer beside a tin of Woodbines nobody smoked any more, and by the time we reached Gloucester it was full of my mother's drawings. She filled every margin with lines that curled inside other lines, the nib pressed so hard the paper shone through on the back. Coal, she would write, then a row of rings. Eleven tons. Ring, ring, ring.

The summer the Mercy Ann lost her rudder at Tewkesbury, we sat three weeks waiting on a smith. A man came along the towpath with a wet sack over his shoulder and asked if anyone had seen his seahorse. He said he had carried it up from the estuary in a jam jar and it had got out at the lock. My mother laughed and said nothing that small could swim upriver against the flood. He looked at her drawing spread on the table, the spiny fins and the tail wound tight, and said that was exactly the sort of thing that would.

He was gone by dusk. In the morning the page had a new mark at the foot, a curl like a tail, and the margin where the rings had been was blank. The jam jar was on the stove, empty except for a single bent reed, its ridges fine and close like the lines of her ink. I kept the reed in the drawer with the book. The smith came on the Tuesday, and we pushed off on the afternoon ebb, and my mother drew rings all the way to Worcester without once looking up.
