Seahorse with swirls and bubbles

Black and grey · Flash

A black line drawing of a seahorse with a spiralled tail, spiky dorsal ridges and a curled snout. Surrounding it are swirling curved lines that suggest water, along with small open and filled circles that read as bubbles. The bold, uniform black linework sits on a plain white background, with the composition centred and balanced.

The rain had been coming sideways off the harbour since six, and the fish stall at the back of Eastgate Market was the last one with its awning still up. Dilys was sorting skate into crates when she saw the thing caught in the net of a hake: a seahorse no longer than her thumb, its curled tail hooked around a loop of twine, its snout pale with cold.

She thought about the bins behind the chip shop, the drain at the corner, the bucket of brine her father kept for the lobsters. Instead she filled a jam jar from the tap at the cleaning sink and set the seahorse inside, watching it unwind slowly, its ridges lifting like the crest of a wave. A man in a yellow cagoule leaned over the counter and asked whether it was for sale. She said no, and surprised herself.

All afternoon the rain kept on. Tiny bubbles clung to the glass, and every time the strip lights flickered she counted them. By closing time the seahorse had drifted from the bottom to the top and back again, curling its tail around a stalk of weed she had pushed in with a fork.

When the shutters came down, Dilys carried the jar past the dripping stalls and down the slipway to where the tide was turning under the pier. She tipped the water gently into the harbour. The seahorse hung a moment in the grey swell, then turned its snout towards the open sea, and a line of bubbles rose behind it like a question someone had finally answered.
