Day ninety-one, and the Harriet Lowe has finally put her nose into warm water. Mr Okonedo says we are off a reef the chart calls Bathurst Shoals, though the chart is older than my mother. I have filled both pockets of my oilskin with things the tide left behind: a scallop the colour of weak tea, two starfish gone stiff as biscuits, and a whelk shell that hums if you hold it to your ear. Mrs Pryce in the galley says they are only rubbish, but she took the scallop for her windowsill.
