Seated Buddha with lotus and mandala

Neo-trad · Black and grey · Flash

A seated Buddha figure rests its head on its hands with eyes closed, set within a circular mandala halo and on top of a large open lotus flower. The design uses clean black outlines with fine dotted detail on the halo and robe, with flowing hair and drapery drawn in simple contour lines. The image is a plain black linework drawing on a cream background with no shading or colour.

The shrine had lost its roof in the winter of the big flood, so the stone man sat in the open with rain running off his shoulders. Ada had been sent up the hill every Thursday to sweep the leaves from his step, and she resented it for the first month and then, without deciding to, began to look forward to it.

Her father had stopped talking after the boat went down off the Skerries. He mended the nets, ate his bread standing up, and went to bed before the lamps were lit. Ada brought her questions up the hill instead, because the figure never answered them. She told him about the goat that had got into the schoolroom and the price of salt. She told him she was angry. He kept his head on his hands and his eyes shut, and the lotus beneath him kept its petals open to the rain as if the weather were nothing to bother about.

One Thursday the pond at the foot of the steps had filled to the brim with black water, and a pale lily had come up through it, the only one for miles. She sat on the wet step beside the statue and tried to sit the way he did, hands under her chin, and found her knees ached and her neck cramped within a minute. She laughed at herself, and then she was crying, which she had not done in front of anyone since the funeral.

When she came down the hill her father was at the table with two cups already poured. He did not ask where she had been. He pushed one cup across to her and, for the first time since the boat, said her name.
