Paisley and floral ink drawing

Dotwork · Black and grey · Flash

The drawing shows a dense arrangement of paisley swirls, pointed leaves and a central flower with a rosette core, all built from curling outlines. Fine uniform linework is filled with dots, dashes and small scalloped patterns, giving a dotwork-like texture across the surface. It is rendered entirely in black ink on off-white paper with no colour.

The customs officer at Dover had seen plenty of paperwork, but never a man who wanted to declare a garden. Tomasz Wierzbicki unrolled the sheet of cartridge paper across the counter and weighed its corners with his own coffee cup and a stapler. Every inch of it was black ink: swirling paisleys like ferns uncurling in a hurry, leaves pointed as knife tips, a flower at the centre with a rosette heart built from a hundred tiny scallops and dots.

"It's a drawing," he said. "My grandmother's. She made it the winter before she left Lodz, and she told me it was the only thing she could carry without it being searched."

The officer, whose name was Pritchard and who had a daughter learning to crochet, turned the sheet slowly under the lamp. The paisley at the top curled back on itself the way the river Bzura did below the old mill, and the dots seemed to multiply the longer he looked, until he could no longer count them and gave up trying. He asked what it was for.

"For a wall," Tomasz said. "She always said a house wants one thing that doesn't need to be explained."

Pritchard stamped the form without opening the folder beneath it. Then he slid the drawing back across the counter, carefully, by its edges, the way one returns a letter from someone who has died. "Mind the leaves," he said. "They're still wet at the points."
