The rain came sideways again this morning, so I have moved the order book under the glasshouse and am writing this on the back of a seed invoice. Dear Ruth, the lych-gate angel went up on Tuesday. Tom Barnett carved her out of Portland stone over the winter, and half the village turned out to watch her lifted onto the beam with the climbing roses trailing beneath, still wrapped in sacking.

You would have fussed over the wings. Tom spent a fortnight on the feathers alone, cutting each one back to a fine edge so the rain would run off instead of pooling. The wreath of blossom in her hair took him longer than the face. He said the face was easy because he only had to picture your mother's patience, but the flowers were hard because they had to look as if they might drop at any moment.

Then came the question that held everything up. Tom wanted to know which way she should face, towards the church or out to the lane where the carts pass. The vicar said the church. I said the lane, because whoever stops at that gate ought to be the one she is looking at. We argued it over tea for a week. In the end I took a cutting from the old red rose in the south bed and planted it at her feet, and this morning there was one bud open on it, pale pink and turned towards the road. I have decided that settles it. Come and see her when you are home, and bring the good boots, the path is a mess.
