Seven chakra lotus tattoos down the spine
Botanical · Back · Colour · Photo
A stack of seven lotus-shaped chakra symbols runs down the centre of the back, one above the other. Each has fine outlines and soft, graduated shading, with some showing triangles or circles inside the petals. The colours move through violet, blue, turquoise, green, yellow, orange and red against plain, lightly freckled skin, with the subject's dark hair visible at the top of the frame.

Nell had been on the scaffold since six, and the mortar in her tin had stiffened in the cold. Below her the chapel floor was a nest of fallen masonry and ivy, the east wall open to the sky since the roof gave up in the winter of the flood. Her task was the boss column, the stack of carved stone lotuses that once climbed the central pier of the undercroft. There had been seven, each the size of a cartwheel, each with a small carved triangle at its heart. Only four were still whole. The rest lay in the nettles like dropped pies.

Her foreman, Wyn, told her not to bother with paint. "Nobody's asking for colour," he said, leaning on the wheelbarrow with his flask. But the old survey notes said the bosses had been painted, and behind the fourth one she had found a flake of blue no bigger than a fingernail, then a green, then, pressed beneath a stone the size of a loaf, a red so bright it looked wet.
She spent a week matching the pigments from those scraps, mixing lime wash and ground ochre in a jam jar on the window ledge. Violet was the hardest. It dried grey every time until she added a pinch of powder from a man in Kendal who sold minerals by post.
On the last morning she climbed the scaffold with the red pot and the finest brush she owned. Sun came through the broken wall and lay across the stacked stone like a warm hand. She started with the bottom lotus and worked upward, so that each petal she finished was one less she could smudge. When she reached the top, the violet crown that had lain longest in the nettles, she stopped. The stone was already warm, and for once nobody was waiting for her to come down.
